Video Girdwood
2020 The Fire Hall
could include community center One of Girwood's
20/20's highest priorities is finding a financial
solution to construction of a new community center
and library. We believe stand-
alone bonding is not a viable option nor is adding
this project to a municipal library bond. Anchorage
voters have not approved a library bond since
construction of the trans- Alaska pipeline. We also
question whether Girdwood can muster the necessary
support to create an assessment
district. We met with Sen.
Ted Stevens on several occasions and remain in
contact with his office. The Senator wants a
solution to this situation. After examining a
number of options, we believe the best course may
be to attach the community center/ library project
to a needed expansion of the Girdwood Fire Hall
Emergency Services Expansion. This project is long
overdue. Three emergencies
helped establish the need for an expanded emergency
command and service center, including the 1997
flood, the 1999 Turnagain Pass avalanche and the
five- day power outage and road blockage in 2000.
We believe we have a better chance to find funding
if the community area can double as a command
center and the library can be converted into an
emergency shelter.
