Group focuses on managed development

A group of business, civic and sports leaders formed Girdwood 20/20 in 1999 to help bring a focus and direction to the community's future. The organization's founders well understood that growth needs to be managed and if left unchecked, Girdwood could slip into a dysfunctional, overgrown town. We set out then, and continue today, to provide a resource to assist Girdwood become a year- round resort and a great place to call home. Girdwood 2020 uses the Girdwood Area Plan as its guide. This plan encompasses the hard work of hundreds of Girdwood residents through a year- long process that included focus groups, empirical research and town meetings. It took another three years of massage to get the plan through the Girdwood Board of Supervisors and the Anchorage Assembly. The final result is a plan supported by overwhelming majorities in both Girdwood and Anchorage. It 's our road map for Girdwood for the next 20 years. In addition to supporting well- considered growth, Girdwood 2020 adopted a number of other projects, including a commitment to help find financing for a new community center, develop a local museum and preserve the Round House as a historical landmark.

There are some who call us boomers, poised to bulldoze this valley. Nothing could be further from the truth. We support only those visitor- related projects that are environmentally responsible and blend into our unique community. These include activities that compliment the existing ski resort, such as heli- and cat- skiing in the winter, multi- use trails, golf, fishing, flightseeing and goldpanning.

These activities create sustainable jobs for locals and enhanced opportunities for small businesses. They also represent the type of growth this valley and the rest of Anchorage say they support. We also support additional resort development into the Winner Creek area and encourage the Heritage Land Bank to issue a request for proposals for potential developers. This expansion, which we believe can be accomplished with minimal infrastructure, will open XXX acres of quality ski slopes for our skiing pleasure and allow investors to market this community as a true boutique destination. We're excited about the future because we believe that Girdwood can be developed as a model community if we all work together. We invite you to join us as we assist Girdwood through its next phase of managed growth.
