Video Girdwood
2020 Keeping our
transportation options open Change can be a
bitter pill, particularly when the change is not
about today but tomorrow. But to function
effectively in the future, Girdwood needs to change
the way it moves people in and out of the valley.
How to accomplish this change divided our community
when the Anchorage Assembly considered the Girdwood
Commercial Area and Transportation Area
Plan. The
transportation part of the plan, which grew out of
the visioning process in this valley, called for
dedication of a rail corridor from the Seward
Highway to the resort. This provision conjured up
visions of freight trains belching black smoke as
they noisily made their way through the valley for
some residents. Others looked at the plan and saw a
modern, non- polluting light- rail system that
would pick up and drop off visitors and local
residents and take our kids to school. The Assembly
eventually reached a compromise that included a
dedicated mass transit corridor. This was a
decision we supported because the day will come
when we will need another way to enter and exit
this valley.
